Original Japanese color woodblock print by renowned artist Jun'ichirō Sekino (1914–1988), titled "Young Girl with Two Cardinals," also known as "Red Birds." Dating to circa 1959, this striking midcentury composition depicts a young girl with two brilliant crimson birds, set against a dramatic black background and a muted palette of gray, olive, and cream.
The print is pencil-signed "Jun Sekino" in the lower right margin and bears the artist's distinctive red "Jun" seal beneath the image. It is unnumbered.
An influential figure in Japan's sōsaku-hanga (creative print) movement, Sekino was celebrated for his expressive portraits, bold compositions, and mastery of woodblock printmaking. His works are represented in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the British Museum.
The composition exemplifies Sekino's distinctive blend of traditional Japanese printmaking and modernist design. Its graphic contrast, restrained palette, and enigmatic subject make it particularly compelling in a midcentury modern or eclectic interior.
