The fish is depicted in a dynamic, leaping pose with its head raised and mouth open, as if swimming upstream. Its body is richly decorated in vibrant cloisonné enamel on a bright yellow ground, featuring intricate, multi-colored floral motifs and scrolling vine patterns in shades of orange, green, blue, white, and purple. A prominent chain of gilt coins drapes across its upper body, and it has applied gilt bronze fins, tail, and facial details. The figure is mounted on a heavily textured, gilt-bronze base modeled as swirling waves. The underside of the base bears a cast seal mark.
