A charming vintage needlepoint that brings color, handcrafted texture, and personality to a collected room. Four waterside birds inhabit a stylized marshland of blue water, green reeds, brown cattails, and slender rust-colored trees. A tall gray heron anchors the composition, joined by a white wading bird and two shorebirds gathered on a sandy bank.
The closely worked surface offers a beautiful counterpoint to smooth porcelain, polished wood, and brass. Patterned plumage, diagonal grasses, and cream-colored clouds give the scene detail and movement, while its blue-and-green palette makes it especially easy to incorporate into layered interiors.
Presented under glass in a substantial frame combining warm brown, dark recessed molding, and a broad gold-toned border. Stitched initials “L.H.” and the notation “73–74” support a circa 1973–1974 date. A Mickelson’s framing label on the reverse preserves its connection to the Washington, D.C. framing establishment at 709 G Street N.W.
Designer Notes
A natural fit for grandmillennial rooms, English country interiors, and relaxed coastal homes. Pair with blue-and-white porcelain, patterned lampshades, warm wood, and woven accessories for a collected look. Its intimate scale also makes it an appealing addition to a gallery wall, where needlework introduces texture alongside paintings, botanical prints, and photographs.
