An impressive monumental oil on canvas by Swiss artist Henry Alfred Gsell (1859–1920), titled La Baigneuse, or The Bather. Signed and dated 1914 at the lower left, this striking painting combines an elegantly posed female nude with a dramatic coastal landscape.
The redheaded bather turns to look over her shoulder, her softly modeled figure set against rugged, rust-colored cliffs and richly layered blue water. White accents suggest waves breaking along the rocky shore, while distant mountains and a cloud-filled sky give the composition depth and atmosphere. The contrast between the luminous flesh tones, copper-colored hair, and deep blues creates a compelling focal point.
Measuring six feet in height before framing, the canvas has an exceptional architectural presence. Its elaborate gesso and giltwood frame features scrolling foliage, floral ornament, and prominent decorative flourishes, complementing the painting’s rich palette and grand scale. A commanding centerpiece for an entrance hall, salon, or spacious living room.
The supplied catalog information records the painting as exhibited at the 1914 Paris Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, number 521, and reproduced as a postcard around 1950 by A. Noyer, Paris.
