A charming pair of hand-painted bisque porcelain hen salt and pepper shakers, made in Japan in the mid-20th century. Matte white bodies are brushed with black barred plumage and finished with bright red combs and wattles. Each hen stands on a glazed naturalistic base with sculpted feet, leaves, and a textured moss detail. One hen poses upright and the other bends to peck, so the pair plays off each other beautifully on the table.
A sweet find for farmhouse kitchens, chicken collectors, and anyone who loves a little barnyard whimsy. Both retain their original foil Japan import labels and cork stoppers, and they make a delightful hostess or Easter gift.
