Handwoven in wool and originating circa 1950-1959 from France, this 8x9 vintage French Aubusson carpet joins Rug & Kilim’s renowned Vintage collection. The field features cream oval reserves with delicate rose garlands and a deep burgundy border.
On the Design:
Originating in the Creuse valley of central France during the 16th century, Aubusson weaving evolved into one of Western Europe’s premier textile arts, historically commissioned for royal châteaux, grand townhouses, and aristocratic estates across the continent. Celebrated for painterly floral motifs, sophisticated scrolling cartouches, and understated elegance, these textiles offered a refined alternative to heavy orientals, harmonizing seamlessly with the architectural plasterwork, parquetry flooring, and gilded woodwork of classic French interiors. This mid-century piece honors that majestic heritage, offering an authentic vintage presentation of Neoclassical floral design from the post-war era. Masterful artisan restoration is further showcased by historic tailoring along the weave—known in the trade as a cut and shut—where delicate hand-stitching was executed along the reverse to subtly alter and re-proportion the continuous floral reserves without disturbing the flow of the pattern. Free from modern commercial artificiality, this carpet stands as an enduring, character-rich artifact of European decorative history for collectors of fine French textiles.
The visual narrative unfolds across an allover lattice of fluid oval reserves, defined by sweeping leafy cartouches and delicate ribbon garlands anchored against a soft cream background. Inside each framed compartment, lush botanical bouquets display detailed cabbage roses, opening peonies, delicate jasmine, and cascading floral sprays. The chromatic palette relies on soft, romantic hues, combining dusty rose, plum pink, sage green, olive, honey gold, and parchment beige within the luminous field. Surrounding the delicate central field is a solid, grounding outer border in rich burgundy red, providing a bold framing element that crispens the pastel tones of the inner bouquet reserves. Natural tonal variation and gentle age-honored patina across the wool yarns give the piece an atmospheric depth under changing light. This handwoven work serves as a sophisticated, storytelling centerpiece for formal dining rooms, grand bedrooms, and classical living salons. The accompanying book, Scènes d’intérieur. Aquarelles de la collection Mario Praz et Chigi by Collectif, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B327) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
