Hand-knotted in wool and originating circa 1950-1959 from Afghanistan, this 3x5 vintage Gabbeh rug joins Rug & Kilim’s Vintage collection. The design depicts a grand animal, a stepped diamond motif, and two human figures against a gold field, framed by an animal border.
On the Design:
In nomadic weaving traditions, camel imagery holds a celebrated position, historically symbolizing endurance, prosperity, and the life-giving journey across arid trade routes. Curated with uninhibited folk art spontaneity, Gabbeh pictorials offer a captivating window into the weaver's personal imagination, translating cherished animal lore and everyday pastoral scenes through bold graphic simplification. Rural artisans created these textiles without rigid workshop templates, relying on memory and ancestral symbols to record tribal life, livestock, and protective motifs. In desert lore, the open textured field reflects the expansive desert terrain, while the inclusion of human figures alongside desert fauna creates an intimate visual record of nomadic companionship. The execution preserves the raw, unpretentious spirit of original village looms, transforming functional tribal craft into a monumental piece of abstract folk art that honors centuries of regional weaving heritage.
Centered against a warm, dotted gold-tan field, a grand camel figure stands prominently across the upper ground in rich espresso wool, detailed with a tall neck, distinct hump, and sturdy limbs. Positioned directly beneath the animal is a bold stepped diamond lozenge in deep brown, white, and terracotta, symbolizing a desert water basin or protective talisman, flanked by two stylized human figures or guardians that anchor the lower field. Floating across the entire central space is a dense field of micro-geometric dots and small stepped diamonds, creating a rich visual texture that evokes windblown sand. Encircling the entire scene is a wide gray-beige border filled with a continuous procession of small quadruped animal motifs in terracotta, ochre, and charcoal. Bounded by a simple outer selvedge, this masterly interplay of saturated earth tones, playful figurative forms, and historic symbolism provides designers with an irresistible accent piece to introduce narrative warmth, historic character, and graphic charm into entryways, private studies, or curated modern living spaces. The accompanying book, Frank Lloyd Wright: The Rooms by Margo Stipe, with a foreword by David A. Hanks and photographs by Alan Weintraub, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim.
