A striking vintage Chinese armchair crafted in a richly toned dark hardwood and extensively decorated with mother-of-pearl inlay, carved openwork, floral motifs, birds, butterflies, and traditional Chinese longevity symbols.
The chair features an unusually sculptural silhouette, beginning with a dramatic pierced crest and flowing curved back supports surrounding a large oval back medallion. The medallion is beautifully inlaid with an elaborate garden scene depicting flowering branches, foliage, birds, rocks, and botanical imagery rendered in shimmering mother-of-pearl.
Additional iridescent inlay decorates the broad arms, seat rail, legs, and surrounding frame, catching tones of green, pink, gold, and blue depending on the light. The scrolling open arms are especially impressive, with large carved circular flourishes that give the chair a strong architectural presence.
Traditional shou longevity medallions appear beneath the back panel and along the carved apron, reinforcing the chair’s distinctly Chinese decorative vocabulary. The shaped legs, pierced apron, and carved crest further contribute to its highly ornamental presentation.
The solid wood seat retains additional mother-of-pearl decoration along the front edge, while the dark reddish-brown finish provides a dramatic backdrop for the colorful inlay.
A wonderfully decorative statement chair that would work beautifully as an accent piece in an entry, library, bedroom, living room, or collected eclectic interior.
Please note: the exact wood species has not been independently verified. The chair has the appearance and coloration commonly associated with traditional Chinese rosewood furniture, but we are conservatively describing it as hardwood.

The wood shows scattered surface scratches, finish wear, rubbing, small nicks, and minor marks consistent with age and previous use. There is one small localized area of loss to the mother-of-pearl inlay; the remaining inlay is largely intact and displays beautifully. Additional minor imperfections and variation may be present throughout the hand-decorated surfaces. Structurally presents well. Please review all photographs closely, as they form an important part of the condition description. Our inventory features a curated selection of vintage furnishings and decorative pieces, each with its own character, history, and age-related imperfections. As vintage items, condition will naturally vary, and signs of previous use—including minor wear, marks, finish variations, or other imperfections—may be present. These characteristics are part of the individuality and history of each piece. Photographs are provided as an important visual reference for condition, and we encourage buyers to review all images carefully. We believe the beauty of vintage lies not only in its design, but also in the character acquired through a previous life. A single image has been digitally staged to showcase potential placement and styling. The remaining photographs provide the most accurate representation of the piece’s condition, finish, and overall character. less
