Rare mid-19th-century French relief-molded porcelain Silenus/Bacchus pitcher attributed to Jacob Petit, circa 1850.
Elaborately modeled with classical Bacchanalian figures, grape clusters, vines and foliage, with a naturalistic branch-form handle. White porcelain exterior with extensive gilding to the interior and shaped rim.
A Jacob Petit Pichet aux silènes dating to circa 1850 is documented by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, in hard-paste biscuit porcelain and gilding. The museum example measures approximately 6.3 x 5.5 x 3.7 inches, notably close to this example.
Another of same form and size is listed at the Museum of Cleveland. See photo.
Measurements: just at 6” H x approximately 5.5” handle-to-spout x approximately 3.7” across base.
Underside bears an impressed “30.” The recessed underside has substantial old restoration/fill that may obscure additional original markings.
Condition: Historic metal staple repairs with associated cracks/hairlines, old restoration to underside and age-related wear/loss to gilding. Relief decoration remains highly detailed. Please review all photographs carefully for condition.
France, circa 1850.

It has old metal staple repairs, visible cracks/hairlines, restoration to the underside and wear/loss to the gilding. The molded figures and surrounding relief remain remarkably crisp. Please enlarge and review all photographs for condition. The old staple repairs are particularly evocative—evidence that an earlier owner considered the pitcher sufficiently valuable to have it professionally repaired rather than discarded. less
