Hand-knotted in wool and mohair, this 14x20 contemporary oversized rug joins Rug & Kilim’s Modern collection, showcasing an architectural high-low ribbed grid layout in warm taupe, mink, and soft beige tones.
On the Design:
The architectural tradition of structural grid frameworks and ribbed surface carving represents a pivotal movement in modern minimalist design, tracing its roots to mid-century brutalism, Bauhaus textile discipline, and modern architectural low-reliefs. Shifting away from decorative iconography, visionary 20th-century weavers prioritized tactile depth, subtle directional shadows, and material purity to define interior atmosphere. This contemporary grand oversized creation honors that structural lineage, blending fine hand-spun wool with the silky, light-refracting luster of natural mohair yarns. Crafted and expertly sheared with a low-profile high-low pile, the horizontal ribbed channels are hand-carved directly into the surface, allowing directional light to illuminate every linear groove. The result is an art-grade masterwork that translates architectural grid theory into a quiet, three-dimensional study in tactile luxury for monumental interiors.
The surface presents an intricate, highly detailed study in monochromatic warmth, linear rhythm, and sculpted relief. Expanding across the broad field is an expansive grid network composed of densely packed horizontal ridges intersected by clean vertical channels. Rendered in a serene, multi-tonal palette of warm taupe, soft mink, light oat, and natural beige, the design relies on natural ambient light to bring out its structural contours. The addition of premium mohair fibers imparts a subtle, pearlescent sheen to the raised ribbed bars, contrasting beautifully against the matte recessed grid lines and casting soft, directional shadows throughout the day. Smooth micro-variations within the un-dyed natural yarns introduce a soft, living warmth that prevents the precise geometric layout from feeling cold. Finished with clean, hand-bound edges, this work serves as an elevated, storytelling anchor for expansive living spaces, gallery rooms, and curated architectural environments. The accompanying book, Tino Zervudachi by Natasha Fraser, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B179) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
