A gray squirrel crouches on a flat, pale rock near the center of the picture, its tail raised in a dark plume behind it. At lower left, a small turtle with a tan shell and a yellow-striped head rests on a fallen log. Ferns and leafy vines hang down over the upper half of the painting, and the whole scene sits in deep shadow, with light falling on the animals, the rocks and the edges of the leaves.

The painting measures 20 inches high by 16 inches wide. It is framed and ready to hang, and measures 21.25 by 17.25 inches framed. The frame is shown in the photographs.
