A striking late 19th-century French still life by Joseph de Ruysscher (1840–1905), featuring a freshly caught fish laid across a tabletop alongside a dark copper vessel and dish of warm red-orange shellfish. The silvery body of the fish emerges dramatically from the nearly black background, with flashes of gold, coral, and copper bringing warmth and depth to the moody composition.
De Ruysscher was a French painter active in the late 19th century, particularly known for his atmospheric woodland scenes and paintings of the Forest of Fontainebleau. His work continues to appear at European auction, including a signed 1892 Sous bois à Fontainebleau recently estimated at €2,000–€3,000 by Millon, while another work sold at Dorotheum for €3,823. His known body of work also includes still lifes—a particularly relevant example depicts skate, fish, and lobster, establishing seafood as a documented subject within his oeuvre. Millon
This smaller still life feels especially compelling in its elongated format. The dark, almost theatrical treatment of light gives it an old-world presence, while the unusual subject keeps it from feeling overly traditional. Finished in a simple wood frame with delicate gilt inner detailing, it is the kind of antique painting that feels just as at home in a modern kitchen as it does among a collected gallery wall.
