Late 19th-century Victorian fireplace mantel and surround, believed to be original to an 1877 Washington, D.C. townhouse. Constructed primarily of dark slate with a contrasting green mantel shelf, the surround features incised geometric and quatrefoil decoration with surviving traces of its original gold gilding.
Its restrained architectural form and subtle decorative detailing are characteristic of the Victorian period and would work particularly well in a historic townhouse, brownstone, or period restoration.
Currently installed and shown in situ.
