Hand-knotted in premium wool, this contemporary 9x12 Art Deco rug from India joins Rug & Kilim’s modern collections. Softly echoing the design sensibilities of Paule Leleu, the piece features a structured diamond floral grid framed by an undulating ivory guard line and a striking, solid crimson-red border.
On the Design:
Drawing inspiration from the 1925 Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs, this contemporary carpet revives the architectural rigor of early 20th-century French design. The layout unfolds through an intricately ordered lattice of interlocking diamond forms rendered with extraordinary precision, creating a visual rhythm that feels simultaneously monumental and intensely detailed. Within each geometric compartment, finely articulated botanical motifs soften the rigor of the structure, producing a remarkable tension between disciplined symmetry and decorative flourish.
Rich tones of crimson, sapphire, ivory, muted lavender, and sable brown interact with exceptional chromatic depth, recalling the elevated palette traditions of the finest Art Deco interiors. Equally compelling is the rug’s architectural framing and historical significance within the evolution of post-war French decorative arts. The expansive tonal border, rendered in lustrous chocolate and umber hues, acts as a sculptural enclosure around the highly animated field, heightening both the visual clarity and sophistication of the central framework. Ribbon-like guard borders introduce graceful movement while preserving the rug’s remarkable sense of restraint and balance. The dense, plush pile replicates the luxurious weight and resilient handle demanded by historic Parisian ateliers. As a contemporary artifact, it successfully unites historic European Deco vocabulary with world-class modern loom craft, offering profound architectural presence for modern spaces. The accompanying book, The House of Leleu: Classic French Style for a Modern World 1920-1973 by Françoise Siriex, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B300) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
