Hand-knotted in premium wool, this contemporary 9x12 Art Deco rug from India joins Rug & Kilim’s renowned Art Deco collection. The layout centers on a vast, unadorned beige open field that dramatically underscores a vibrant, maximalist border of geometric floral patterns, executed in a polychromatic palette of blue, orange, and warm earthy tones with a subtle high-low texture.
On the Design:
Drawing inspiration from the golden age of 1920s European modernism, this contemporary carpet revives the architectural tension that defined classical Art Deco weaving. During the Deco period, visionary ateliers deliberately stripped away the cluttered, all-over patterns of traditional 19th-century carpets, utilizing vast expanses of negative space to anchor the sleek, aerodynamic furniture of the era. This carpet masterfully adopts that spatial philosophy, utilizing a luminous beige open field to direct complete visual focus toward its robust, maximalist border. The perimeter features a stylized, geometric interpretation of botanical motifs, where traditional floral arabesques have been reimagined as structured, abstract forms in striking shades of blue and orange.
To elevate the tactile experience, modern artisans incorporated a subtle high-low pile technique, selectively carving the wool around the abstract floral border. This sculptural approach not only mimics the dimensional luxury of antique European carpets but also enhances the optical depth of the polychromatic border against the flat expanse of the central field. Hand-knotted with exacting precision, the dense wool pile achieves a level of structural durability that surpasses many antique counterparts while remaining nearly indistinguishable from historic 1920s curations. As a contemporary artifact, it successfully translates a rare European design lexicon into a highly versatile, resilient modern format, offering profound architectural presence for sophisticated interiors. The accompanying book, The House of Leleu: Classic French Style for a Modern World 1920-1973 by Françoise Siriex, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim.
