Antique political cartoon watercolor created by renowned American illustrator James Montgomery Flagg (1877–1960). The lively composition depicts three exaggerated figures labeled “The Academy,” “S.A.A.,” and “S.A.F.” and incorporates expressive caricature, handwritten labels, and a humorous caption titled “The Inside Story.”
The caption reads, “Mother Academy—‘Come, Pet, you never should have run away from Mommer in the first place!’” Additional details include a container labeled “Privilege Pap,” an artist's palette, and the central figure being welcomed back by the seated Academy character. The artwork is signed “J.M. Flagg” in the lower-right corner and presented within a gray-green mat.
Flagg began contributing artwork to Life magazine at the age of 14 and joined Judge magazine the following year. He later illustrated for Collier's and The Saturday Evening Post and became one of the most prominent American illustrators of the early 20th century. He is best known for creating the iconic “I Want You” Uncle Sam recruitment poster used during World War I.
