Antique watercolor and graphite painting created by renowned American illustrator James Montgomery Flagg (1877–1960). The lively figural composition depicts a red-haired female figure alongside costumed acrobatic characters, with several unfinished pencil sketches revealing portions of the artist's creative process. The artwork is signed “J.M. Flagg” in the upper-right corner and presented within a gray-green mat.
Flagg began contributing artwork to Life magazine at the age of 14 and joined Judge magazine the following year. He later illustrated for Collier's and The Saturday Evening Post and became one of the most prominent American illustrators of the early 20th century. He is best known for creating the iconic “I Want You” Uncle Sam recruitment poster used during World War I.
The expressive lines, lightly applied watercolor, and unfinished background give the composition the character of an original working illustration or preparatory study.
