As documented on Manago's Wikipedia page (see attached), this composition, based on a period postcard, was one Manago returned to on several occasions during his career; one such example is held in the permanent collection of the « Musée des Beaux-Arts », Marseille, France.
A painting of quiet, luminous intimacy by Vincent Manago - a painter of Algerian and southern Mediterranean subjects working in the Orientalist tradition of the early 20th century, depicting a young woman in a red dress engaged in the ancient, rhythmic gesture of preparing couscous.
The composition is structured by the warm afternoon light falling across the figure, the grain, and the bowl, a scene at once domestic and timeless. Manago's handling of the red dress against the warm ochres of the interior demonstrates the painter's sensitivity to color and atmosphere.
Oil on panel. The work is in good condition consistent with age. A characteristic and appealing example of the Orientalist genre at its most humanly observed - far from the staged exoticism of lesser works, this painting possesses genuine pictorial conviction.
Manago is a documented artist, referenced in Gérard Schurr's Les Petits Maîtres de la Peinture (Vol. 7).
