This striking vintage portable chest is crafted from rosewood (花梨木) and decorated in vibrant polychrome lacquer painting. The piece features a curved carrying handle topped with carved dragon-head terminals, and two drawers with yellow-ground panels painted with stylized foliate scrolls and central red blossoms.
The lower apron is carved with flowing scrollwork, adding depth and movement to the silhouette. This form — a tiered, handled chest with drawers — traditionally served as a portable vanity box or document chest for scholars and travelers.
