This is a true one of a kind antique. Although there were thousands of Delft Blue tiles that were hand painted in the last hundred years or so, each one is unique and even more rare is to find one that has been signed by the artist who decorated it.
Traditionally, the tiles were made of local ceramic earthenware from the Nordic area it was painted in. People of this region would use them as milestone reminders, life achievements or even create a “life calendar” that would adorn the walls of their home. They made them for themselves and would also gift them to friends and family for achievements/events to remember…
After paper calendars/planners came about, the local creators started a new trend; one that still sticks to this very day! They are called Delft Blue because the tiles were almost always white (in different sizes) and the paint they used was almost always blue; “delft blue”. And instead of life events, the tiles began to get decorated with depictions of the gorgeous landscape that is the Nordic region. They are well-known for their seaside windmills and vast ocean coast.
Just like this on one here. I found this at an old thrift shop a few years back & liked it right away! Being of Nordic descent myself, I do enjoy holding pieces of history from this region!! (But I do not discriminate any region and it’s lucious relics)!!
This Delft Blue was a good find, it’s still mounted in its original frame, dated from the 1940’s (very early in this trend), stamped “Holland” (where delft was said to have started) (though many countries claim this!!) & where it was originally created AND it’s signed by the artist, which also was a rare thing to happen; especially that early on.
Timeless beauty in the simple artwork of the Nordic region back in the 1940’s. This is a small piece of art that makes a very big statement and represents a time of traditional beginnings for this area. Much love from Holland!
