Handmade in wool, this 4x7 antique Canadian hooked rug originating circa 1920-1929 is a delightful expression of North American folk art. Set against a warm cream field, it displays fluid floral scrollwork and soft pastel blossoms framed by a charming braided rope-twist border.
On the Design:
During the 1920s in Canada—particularly across Quebec and the Atlantic Maritimes, rug hooking evolved from a purely thrifty domestic craft into a celebrated form of regional textile art. Influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, English country garden motifs, and the widespread popularity of printed burlap patterns like the famous *Bluenose* designs, Canadian rug hookers increasingly embraced romantic curvilinear florals and sophisticated pastel palettes. This antique piece beautifully captures that golden era of Canadian handcraft, reflecting a refined aesthetic that favored soft elegance, organic symmetry, and intricate botanical draftsmanship over rigid geometry.
Across an expansive, sunlight-creamed field, two graceful vines entwine in a quiet central dance, unfurling into soft tendrils and luminous blossoms. Framing this open sanctuary is a lush, continuous garland of wild garden flora. It is beautifully rendered in a dreamy, impressionistic palette of dusty plum, pale lavender, buttercup yellow, and quiet sage. A hand-crafted rope-twist border hugs the perimeter like a woven frame around a watercolor landscape, grounding the floating botanical forms with rustic warmth. Imbued with a soft, tactile soul and a gently aged patina, this textile speaks directly to the curious collector—offering interior designers a deeply poetic, storytelling foundation for sunrooms, sanctuaries, and curated historic spaces. The accompanying book, Alighiero Boetti: Game Plan by Christian Rattemeyer and Jason Smith, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B030) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
