Hand-hooked in pure wool, this 10x20 oversized vintage carpet originating circa 1950-1959 is an exciting addition to Rug & Kilim’s Vintage collection. Centered around a pastel floral bouquet across an expansive cream field and framed by a dramatic ink-black border, it pairs grand neoclassical proportions with the soft, cushioned texture of mid-century hand-hooked textiles.
On the Design:
The history of rug hooking began in the early 19th century along the Atlantic Seaboard of North America and northern England. Born from pulling discarded wool fabric scraps and thrums through coarse burlap backing, early hooked rugs were defined by primitive folk aesthetics—featuring naive floral sprigs, simple geometric tiles, and narrative scenes of rural life.
At the center of an expansive, light-flooded beige field rests an elongated botanical medallion, overflowing with delicate blossoms in sky blue, dusty rose, golden yellow, and muted sage. Encircling this central spray is a subtle, tone-on-tone ghosted frame of acanthus fronds, giving the illusion of carved architectural relief within the plush wool pile. Grounding the open cream field is a striking, high-contrast outer border in deep charcoal-black, sculpted into cloud-like scallops and adorned with a continuous garland of soft pastel roses and leafy sprigs. Rich in scale, tactile depth, and dramatic contrast, this vintage carpet provides an extraordinary, storytelling anchor for expansive living rooms, formal dining halls, or curated historic estates. The accompanying book, Roaring: Art, Fashion, and the Automobile in France, 1918–1939 by Genevieve Cortinovis (ed.), is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B243) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
