Hand-knotted in wool, this 2x2 antique Chinese Peking circular rug originating circa 1920-1929 is an exciting addition to Rug & Kilim’s Antique collection. Defined by a striking central pictorial motif of a soaring phoenix and stylized cloud scrolls against a warm beige field, it blends traditional imperial symbolism with serene modern charm underfoot.
On the Design:
Peking carpets of the 1920s represent a distinct renaissance in Chinese textile art. Curated in northern ateliers during the early 20th century, these rugs were celebrated for their open, uncluttered fields, velvety wool pile, and expressive pictorial iconography rooted in classic mythology. Moving away from dense traditional borders, Peking weavers prioritized spatial harmony and crisp linework, allowing symbolic subjects to float gracefully across luminous ground shades of cream and beige. This circular piece beautifully captures that design ethos, turning sacred myth into an intimate, decorative work of art.
At the heart of the round canvas lies a magnificently drafted phoenix or a fenghuang, the legendary symbol of virtue, grace, and rebirth. Rendered in warm rust red with detailed scale patterning across its body and wings, the bird swoops downward as its dramatic tail feathers curl upward in vibrant teal and indigo plumed swirls. Floating beneath are two stylized cloud motifs in slate blue, adding atmospheric depth to the open oatmeal field. Finished with delicate fringe, this antique rug offers a poetic accent for curated interior living spaces. The accompanying book, Textiles of China and Central Asia by Mariachiara Gasparini and Jacqueline Simcox is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B290) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
