Heinrich Pforr is considered one of the most important Hessian landscape painters of the 20th century and was deeply connected throughout his life to the renowned Willingshausen artists' colony, whose tradition of unembellished and realistic plein air painting he masterfully continued in his extensive oeuvre. In his works, the artist virtuously captures traditional rural life, the distinctive characters of the Schwalm region, and the unmistakable light of the Hessian landscape, his practiced and precise line creating tremendous vibrancy and atmospheric density. The present sheet shows two horses harnessed to a plow in profile in a finely executed pencil drawing, with another, more rudimentary sketch of horses on the reverse of the paper.
