The lid is decorated with a gold … Read more Small, black lacquered box measuring approximately 3.9 × 9.2 × 6.9 cm (H/W/D). The lid is decorated with a gold and bronze painting depicting a water bird, likely a heron, among lotus flowers and aquatic plants. The box originates from Japan and was probably made in the late 19th or early 20th century. The front has a clasp with a delicate metal fitting, but no key is included. These lacquered pieces were traditionally made at sea, as only there could the dust-free conditions be found that were essential for the delicate lacquer finish. The sides are unadorned and are in the same condition as the rest of the box. The lacquer surface shows significant signs of age, including scratches, a dull finish, and chips along the edges.
