Vico Magistretti's Maralunga, designed in 1973, is one of the most awarded furniture designs in history—it received the Compasso d'Oro in 1979. The story behind it is legendary: Cesare Cassina is said to have disliked the prototype so much that he struck it, breaking the backrest, which then fell into the very bent shape that makes the piece famous today. The principle is particularly evident in the armchair: the side panels frame the seat, the armrests protrude above them like separate cushions, and everything flows together in soft curves. The espresso-colored leather enhances this comfortable effect. The real ingenuity lies invisibly within the upholstery. An ordinary bicycle chain is embedded in the foam of the backrest—you use it to fold the back cushion upwards, where it becomes a headrest. with a single movement, the low lounge chair transforms into a high-backed chair with full neck support, and back again. The headrest is shown in its raised position in the image. Cassina patented this mechanism, and it remains the reason why the Maralunga is a staple in every design collection. Manual function: Backrest folds up to create a headrest. Design: Vico Magistretti for Cassina, 1973. Awarded the Compasso d'Oro 1979. Patented chain mechanism in the back cushion.
