This evocative vintage Impressionist mixed-media painting by American artist James G. Llewelyn (1921–2019) captures the quiet romance of a garden landscape through the artist’s distinctive combination of églomisé—reverse painting on glass—and pastel on paper.
The composition draws the viewer immediately into a softly illuminated garden path that recedes toward the center of the scene. Two lightly rendered figures stroll together in the distance, accompanied by a smaller dark dog along the path, lending the work a wonderful sense of scale, movement, and narrative. Rather than defining his subjects with precise detail, Llewelyn allows them to emerge almost dreamlike from the surrounding landscape.
Abundant flowers in touches of pink, red, white, and yellow border the pathway, while dense foliage and mature trees frame the scene. Particularly effective is the sweeping tree canopy extending across the upper right, which creates a natural arch over the figures and directs the eye toward the luminous center of the composition. Layers of muted green, gray, russet, rose, and cream create an atmospheric quality reminiscent of a garden viewed through the haze of memory.
The unusual mixed-media technique adds another dimension to the work. Llewelyn was particularly accomplished in églomisé, the historic technique of painting in reverse on the back of glass. Here, its luminous qualities are combined with the softer, velvety character of pastel on paper, producing a richly textured surface and subtle interplay of light and color. The painting is signed by James Llewelyn and presented in a substantial gold-finished wood frame, whose warm gilded surface beautifully complements the autumnal tones and softly glowing landscape. The broad architectural molding gives this relatively intimate painting considerably greater presence when displayed.
The overall dimensions: approximately 22 inches wide × 19 inches high × 2 inches deep. The artwork size is approximately 13.25 inches wide × 10.5 inches high. Good vintage condition with some wear and signs of handling to the frame. There is an auction label reference on back. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
James Garfield Llewelyn (1921–2019) was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and studied fine art in Pittsburgh and Chicago. During World War II, he served as a bombardier in the U.S. Army Air Corps, flying 29 missions aboard B-17s from Framlingham, England. Following the war, he studied at Pittsburgh’s Ad Art School through the GI Bill and began a professional career encompassing commercial illustration, portraiture and fine art. He later worked in Philadelphia as an illustrator for John Wanamaker before operating an art shop and gallery in Collingswood, New Jersey with his wife and fellow artist, Gloria. Llewelyn ultimately devoted himself to painting and became particularly recognized for his Impressionistic landscapes, portraits, and accomplished églomisé works. His paintings entered private collections throughout the United States, with his work particularly collected in the Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. areas. His career eventually brought him to Manchester, Vermont, where he continued his artistic life. Llewelyn died in 2019 at the age of 98, leaving behind a long career devoted to American representational and Impressionist art.
A wonderfully atmospheric work, this painting would be especially appealing in a traditional, English Country, French-inspired, collected, or Grandmillennial interior, where its gilded frame, romantic garden subject, and softly Impressionistic palette can be appreciated.
A particularly charming example of James G. Llewelyn’s Impressionistic style and unusual mixed-media technique, combining an intimate garden narrative with the luminous character of reverse-painted glass.
