Striking late 18th-century French religious sculpture depicting St. Matthew, hand carved in oak and dating to circa 1780. One of the four Gospel writers, St. Matthew is traditionally represented with a book, referencing his authorship of one of the Gospels.
The figure is carved with a full beard and appears draped in a flowing cloak, with carefully rendered details throughout. His hands are positioned in a traditional religious gesture, potentially symbolizing Christian teachings concerning the divine and human nature of Christ and the Holy Trinity.
The warm character of the aged oak and expressive hand carving give this antique devotional sculpture a powerful presence, making it an exceptional piece for collectors of European religious art, antique sculpture, and ecclesiastical objects.
