Exceptional antique Century No. 9A professional studio camera complete with studio stand, sliding carriage/viewing assembly, and an early J.H. Dallmeyer 3A photographic lens.
The Century Camera Company began producing studio cameras around 1902 and was acquired by Eastman Kodak in 1907. Based on the Kodak and Folmer-Schwing nameplate, this example likely dates to approximately 1907–1928.
Of particular interest is the accompanying Dallmeyer 3A lens. Its early serial number dates the lens to the late 19th century. Dallmeyer was an important British manufacturer of photographic optics during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Unlike many surviving Century studio cameras offered as camera bodies alone, this example retains its stand and sliding carriage. The carriage allowed the photographer to compose and focus an image before exposure and accommodate different photographic formats, including 8x10, 5x7, and 4x5.
This camera was most recently used in an old-time portrait photography studio and was represented to us as working. However, due to its age and specialized nature, we have not independently tested its functionality and cannot guarantee that it is currently operational. I am sure a professional could get it working again.
Overall, the camera appears very well cared for considering its age. There are areas of age-related wear and oxidation, including some small rust-colored spots visible on and around the lens assembly. Please review photographs closely for condition.
An extraordinary piece of photographic history and a fantastic statement object for a photography collection, studio, commercial interior, or historic home.
