An impressive late 19th-century sculptural group attributed to German sculptor Max Arthur Waagen (1833–1898), depicting a majestic stag standing above a recumbent doe within a naturalistic woodland setting.
The composition is particularly decorative, with the stag dramatically elevated above the doe amongst richly modelled rocks, branches and foliage. The substantial scale and detailed naturalistic modelling give the sculpture a strong presence, making it particularly suited to display on a console, pedestal, library table or within a collected interior.
Width is 50 cm, Height 62 cm and Depth approx 22 cm
Weight 14.5 KG
Waagen was known for finely observed animal subjects, particularly deer and other woodland animals, rendered with the naturalism characteristic of late 19th-century European animalier sculpture.
The surface has developed an attractive aged patina, enhancing the depth of the modelling and giving the piece considerable character.
Condition
Good decorative antique condition with age-related surface wear, oxidation and patination.
There is an old loss to the lower leg of the doe. Due to the positioning of the figures and the complexity of the naturalistic base, the loss is relatively unobtrusive when the sculpture is displayed and does not detract significantly from the overall composition. Please refer to the detailed photographs showing this area.
Further minor marks and wear are consistent with the sculpture's age.
