The de Sede design team has given the armchair an abstract, almost expressionistic contour: The shell sweeps in a continuous line from the backrest into the widely flared armrests, and above it, the headrest appears to float freely on two slender metal pins. This separation is the key to the design—it softens the high back and makes the armchair appear sculptural even from behind. Everything is supported by a silver disc base, on which the black body seems to float. The manual function of the DS-255 transforms you from an upright sitting position into a fully reclined position in just a few simple steps: The backrest reclines, and the footrest extends from the front of the frame, creating a continuous reclining surface. Both remain concealed within the sleek silhouette—when the footrest is closed, you wouldn't guess that the armchair is a fully functional recliner.
