This very rare ceiling lamp, also functioning as a flush mount, was designed by hans bergström and produced by ateljé lyktan in åhus, sweden. It exemplifies bergström’s signature fusion of modernist clarity with organic materials, a hallmark of his work during the formative years of swedish lighting design in the mid-20th century. The lamp features a precisely engineered brass frame, composed of clean linear elements arranged in a symmetrical, geometric configuration that aligns with the rational aesthetics of post-war scandinavian functionalism. A distinctive feature of this model is its original cane shades, which are carefully handwoven and fitted to each light source. The use of natural cane introduces a tactile softness to the lamp’s otherwise structured form, allowing it to emit a warm, diffused light. The weave pattern of the cane contributes a subtle texture and modulates the light gently, creating an atmospheric glow that complements both domestic and architectural interiors.
this particular lamp reflects his interest in integrating traditional craft materials like cane into the modern interior, bridging artisanal and industrial production methods. The brass structure remains in well-preserved condition, showing minor surface patina that enhances its authenticity and vintage character. The cane shades are intact, retaining their original weave and coloration, a rare quality given the fragility of the material over time. This lamp is a rare surviving example of early ateljé lyktan production under bergström’s direction and stands as a collectible artifact of scandinavian lighting history.
