A bamboo-effect chair from around 1880, crafted in the style of the French Napoleon III, with a black-painted frame and upholstered seat. The continuous, turned imitation of bamboo nodes unites the legs, struts, and backrest into a formally cohesive whole, while the narrow construction and slender spindles create a calm, clearly proportioned appearance. Historical context: Furniture with a bamboo look emerged in the 19th century as a result of the growing interest in East Asian designs, fueled by the opening of trade and world's fairs. Since genuine bamboo was only available in limited quantities in Europe and difficult to work with, European workshops replicated the characteristic nodes and tapers using local woods – the lathe allowed for consistent quality and larger production runs. Lightweight, armless chairs of this type were part of the movable furnishings of salons, boudoirs, and bedrooms; they were not permanently attached to a table but were moved around the room as needed. The dark, ebonized finish reflected the prevailing taste of the second half of the 19th century and allowed for the visual harmonization of different woods.
Features: The bamboo knots are turned entirely from solid wood, not applied or painted – recognizable by the continuous profiles of the legs, backrests, and crossbars. All four legs are reinforced by a continuous cross brace with an additional cross connection, which gives the narrow frame its rigidity. Design: Historicism, French Napoleon III style with Japonist influence, circa 1880. The design arises solely from the turning: carving or applied ornamentation is completely absent. The backrest is divided horizontally into two sections; the curved upper rail sits freely above the lower crossbar and is supported by four vertical bars. The black finish minimizes the wood grain, allowing only the silhouette and rhythm of the knot profiles to stand out; the floral-patterned upholstery provides the only splash of color.
Dimensions: Height 83 cm × Width 42 cm × Depth 35 cm, seat height 43 cm. Material and condition: Solid wood, presumably beech, black-painted (ebonized). Upholstered seat, covered in tapestry fabric with a floral pattern, trimmed with brass nails. Used, age-appropriate condition with a heavy patina. The finish is worn on the top rail, edges, and legs, revealing the wood underneath; there are minor paint chips on the seat frame. The upholstery is intact and without defects, with age-related fading. The frame is sturdy, the chair stands securely, and it is usable for sitting.
