Dating from the early 19th century, the chairs are beautifully made in rich mahogany and display the elegant proportions and classical detailing characteristic of the Regency period.
Each chair has a shaped tablet top rail terminating in finely carved scrolling ends, above an open back with an attractive horizontal splat decorated with opposing scrolls and a central recessed panel. The two carvers feature the same decorative treatment together with gracefully swept open arms.
The chairs stand on elegant turned and reeded front legs with distinctive carved collar detail, while the rear legs are gently sabre-shaped.
The chairs have been newly upholstered in an attractive floral fabric in muted yellow, cream and grey tones. The upholstered seats are of traditional drop-in construction, allowing each seat to be simply lifted from the chair frame. This makes changing the upholstery particularly straightforward, so the fabric can easily be replaced to complement a different interior scheme without dismantling or disturbing the chairs themselves.
A particularly handsome and practical set of genuine Regency dining chairs, equally suited to a traditional interior or as an antique contrast within a contemporary dining setting.
Condition report:
In good antique condition with age-related wear, marks and variations to the mahogany consistent with their age and use. The chairs have been newly upholstered and the drop-in seats are in excellent, clean condition. The removable seat construction also makes future reupholstery particularly straightforward should an alternative fabric be desired.
