A beautiful wedding chest with floral decorations and a charming drawing of a couple riding a bicycle, dating from around the 1930s in France.
The chest is a rectangular piece with a slightly arched lid, secured with wrought iron fittings. It has handles on the top and sides for carrying, as well as a lock. The front features a charming illustration of a newlywed couple riding a bicycle, flanked by drawings of doves and flowers. This floral decoration is repeated on the sides and back, and the lid also displays this profusion of flowers and a large heart. The interior is lined with blue cotton fabric with polka dots.
This romantic theme perfectly suits the object's function, as the wedding chest is closely linked to the marriage rite. from the Middle Ages until the early 20th century, it was traditional for the groom to offer his future wife a chest to hold part of her dowry, and later, jewels, pearls, and other valuables. He would have commissioned an artist to decorate the front panel and the inside of the lid, as it was generally intended to adorn the bridal chamber. Opening the chest was a symbolic moment, full of emotional and social significance for the couple.
It is a work of great refinement and historical value, a true gem for any setting or art collection.
