A beautifully coordinated pair of circa 1840 French costume lithographs after celebrated Romantic-era artist Achille Devéria (1800–1857), depicting richly dressed figures from the courts of Louis XIII and Henri IV.
The first is titled Costume de Cour sous Louis XIII and depicts an elegantly dressed courtier in plumed hat, cape, lace collar and richly ornamented doublet. The companion work, Costume du Temps de Henri IV, portrays a woman in elaborate period dress with lace ruff and beautifully detailed patterned skirts.
Both prints bear the printed attribution “A. Devéria, del.” and period Paris publishing and printing inscriptions. The sheets reference Goupil et Vibert, Boulevard Montmartre 15 and rue de Lancry 7, as well as the lithographic printer Cattier on rue de Lancry. The Henri IV sheet also bears the Bulla et Delarue publishing inscription.
The pair displays Devéria’s celebrated interest in historical costume and the richly colored lithographic production associated with mid-19th-century Paris.
Presented as a matched pair in gold-tone frames with wide cream mats and narrow burgundy borders. Their restrained palette of burgundy, blue, green, cream and gold makes the pair particularly handsome displayed together.
Sold as a pair.
