The periostracum is the brown covering that protects the shell from acidic water conditions. This protective layer drys out over time and can be removed to reveal a smooth white shell. However, I have chose to keep the layer intact for a more seaworthy look. The inside of the shell is white with a deep pink. The outside is brown with a variety of weathering as well as barnicals/califications. Measurements for this fabulous creation are: Height from top to bottom=7-1/2 inches, Width from front to back=8 inches, Depth=5 inches. This marvelous large conch shell has been well cared for, gently displayed and is in very good vintage condition. There are a few, minor losses around the top edge and there is one whorl in the spire that is missing some surface. Two of the spires have losses at their peaks. Please review the photos for condition information. Please note: this beautiful shell has the periostracum intact with some loosening near the edges. The periostracum can be easily removed for a less rustic looking shell. It is the perfect addition to your nautical decor, particularly if you admire this gift from the sea! See less
