A pair of Barbara Barry Oval X-Back side chairs for Baker Furniture, with the designer's signature crossed-bar motif set into a rounded oval back and carried on slender, gently splayed saber legs. The dark mahogany frames are paired with a umber & gold upholstery woven in a serpentine floral — looping stems and scrolling blossoms rendered in raised ivory thread against a warm ground, with a subtle sheen that shifts as the light moves across it. The generous seat is fuller and deeper than the delicate frame suggests, making them equally at home pulled up to a dining table or set as occasional chairs.
Barbara Barry launched her collection with Baker Furniture in the 1990s, and it became one of the most recognizable lines in American furniture design — a quiet, restrained take on neoclassicism defined by clean geometry and softened proportion. The Oval X-Back is the collection's signature form, and Baker's construction is the reason these chairs remain sought after decades on: solid hardwood frames, hand-finished, and built to the standard that made the company a fixture in fine interiors since 1890.

The upholstery is in very good condition, with minor thread pulling along the piping and a single eraser-sized mark on one seat. The frames show cosmetic wear, with scuffs and rubbed-through finish in numerous areas, most visible along the inner edge of the oval back and the crown. No deep scratches, gouges, or chips. The last two photos show examples of the wear (not exhaustive), with the last photo being the most visible wear on either chair. The wear patterns appear to simply show that these chairs saw honest use. These chairs are absolutely still presentable and functional for those who value patina as character, or are an ideal candidate for a high-gloss lacquer in black, oxblood, or cream, a treatment this frame takes beautifully. less
