A charming and highly decorative set of two French Louis XVI-style circular guéridon or occasional tables, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century.
Each table features a beautifully figured inset marble top displaying expressive gray and charcoal veining against a warm white ground. The marble is surrounded by a molded wood frame retaining an aged dark blue-black painted finish accented with traces of gilt decoration.
The circular aprons are raised on four slender tapered legs, each embellished at the top with finely carved and gilded acanthus-leaf capitals. Gilt detailing along the molded edges provides an elegant contrast to the dark painted surfaces, while the substantial wear and exposed layers of earlier decoration create an exceptionally attractive time-worn patina.
The two tables are graduated in scale but are not nesting tables. Their differing proportions make them particularly versatile for interior-design installations: they can be positioned together as a sculptural grouping or separated throughout a room as drinks tables, occasional tables, bedside tables or compact end tables.
Their restrained neoclassical form works particularly well as a counterpoint to contemporary upholstery and clean architectural interiors. For designers, the combination of aged painted surfaces, original-style gilding and dramatically veined marble provides the sort of texture and historical depth that can keep a newly designed room from feeling overly composed. They would be equally successful in French, Neoclassical, traditional, eclectic, maximalist or contemporary interiors.
The tables retain a notably distressed historic surface with extensive losses, chips and wear to the painted and gilt finishes, together with evidence of previous repairs and age-related movement to the wood. These characteristics are clearly visible in the photographs and contribute significantly to their antique character. The marble tops display age-appropriate surface wear. Please refer to the detailed photographs for a comprehensive representation of condition.
