An exceptionally decorative early 20th-century ceramic wash basin and pitcher set in soft ivory and periwinkle blue.
The generously scaled pitcher features an elaborate sculptural silhouette with a dramatically ruffled rim, sweeping molded ornament and an elegant curved handle. Soft blue shading emphasizes the raised decoration, while a bouquet of blue roses provides a charming focal point on the front.
The coordinating oversized basin is finished with a broad blue shaded border and subtle molded ornamentation, creating a particularly striking presentation when displayed together.
Pitcher-and-basin sets such as this were traditionally displayed on bedroom washstands and used for personal washing before modern indoor plumbing became universal. Today, the set works beautifully as decorative bathroom or bedroom pottery and would be particularly well suited to a traditional, Victorian Revival, cottage, grandmillennial or romantic interior.
The underside bears an intriguing circular American pottery mark consisting of a large stylized T/monogram, “Co.” and “USA.” The exact manufacturer has not been conclusively identified. Several historical American pottery companies used related initials or monograms, and therefore this piece is intentionally being offered without a specific maker attribution.
