Pair of Vintage Sculptural Wood Lamps with Leonard R. Foss Shades – Palm Springs Provenance
Exceptional and highly unusual pair of vintage sculptural wood table lamps, acquired from a residence in Palm Springs, California. The lamps have a striking California Modern / Brutalist sensibility, combining heavily weathered natural wood with architectural, hand-worked forms.
Each lamp is individually constructed and intentionally different in height and composition. Deeply textured wood grain, knots, fissures and dimensional carved or assembled elements give the lamps the presence of functional sculpture. The asymmetrical forms make an especially dramatic statement when displayed together on a long credenza or console.
Of particular interest are the Leonard R. Foss lamp shades accompanying the lamps. Foss is documented in a 1956 design-industry directory at an Oakland, California address, providing an intriguing period California connection to the shades. The understated shades are beautifully proportioned to the sculptural bases and allow the character of the wood to remain the focal point.
The combination of the Palm Springs provenance, sculptural handmade appearance and Leonard R. Foss shades makes this an especially interesting pair for collectors and designers working in Mid-Century Modern, California Modern, Brutalist, Organic Modern or Wabi-Sabi interiors.
