The generously scaled ceramic body presents a continuous courtly procession unfolding through an idealized Japanese landscape. Elegantly dressed figures travel on foot and horseback beneath parasols and ceremonial standards, moving between traditional architecture, pine trees, rocky terrain, waterways, sailing vessels and distant mountains. The original domed cover continues the narrative with an additional group of attendants rendered in softly coordinated blue, lavender, celadon and russet enamels.

Among the composition’s most striking passages is a mounted figure riding a white horse beneath flowering trees and tiled rooflines. Elsewhere, groups of attendants advance in patterned robes, straw hats and formal procession attire. The variety of figures, architecture and landscape elements creates the impression of an extended courtly or daimyō-style journey encircling the entire vessel.

The painter employed fine gilt outlines to articulate clothing, facial features, horse tack, architectural details, patterned textiles and foliage. Iron-red and gold geometric borders encircle the shoulder, cover and neck, visually organizing the elaborate narrative and introducing a rich decorative rhythm.

A finely developed ivory crackle glaze extends across the ceramic body and cover. The dense, evenly distributed craquelure is an intentional characteristic of Satsuma ceramics rather than damage. Subtle tonal shading within the ivory ground gives the landscape a softly atmospheric quality, while areas of gilding catch and reflect light across the rounded surface.

The lamp retains its original covered-jar silhouette, an especially desirable feature in later lighting conversions. Its domed cover rises beneath the lamp fitting, preserving the visual integrity of the original vessel rather than reducing it to a conventional open-neck vase form.

The covered jar is elevated on a pierced, dark-finished carved wooden stand. Brass-toned fittings, a traditional socket assembly, harp and rounded finial complete the conversion while allowing the ceramic body to remain the principal visual focus.

At 35 inches high, this is a substantial statement lamp suited to a library table, entry console, sideboard, writing desk or generously scaled bedside chest. Its combination of ivory crackle glaze, oxblood-red borders and softly colored figural decoration brings warmth and collected character to both richly layered and more restrained interiors.

For the designer, the lamp offers the presence of an antique Japanese decorative object with the practical scale and function of architectural lighting. It would be especially compelling in a Chinoiserie drawing room, English Country library, Grandmillennial bedroom, traditional study or globally collected interior.

Style it alongside lacquerware, Chinese export porcelain, antique brass, botanical artwork, leather-bound books and dark wood furniture. A tailored silk, pleated paper or gathered fabric shade would provide an elegant finishing counterpoint to the intricate ceramic decoration.

A distinctive example of Meiji-period Japanese decorative art transformed for modern use, combining a signed Satsuma vessel, expansive narrative painting and unusually commanding table-lamp scale.

SIGNATURE AND MAKER IDENTIFICATION
Signed within the painted composition in a red-and-gilt cartouche transcribed as “壽光之筆” or “寿光之筆” (Jukō no hitsu), translated as “from the brush of Jukō.”

Jukō is a documented Japanese Satsuma decorator associated with the Meiji period. Both 壽古 and 寿光 are recorded forms of the artist’s name, and established catalog records document Meiji-period Satsuma ceramics signed Jukō.

The surviving inscription provides the maker identification used in this listing. A detailed photograph of the red-and-gilt signature cartouche is included among the listing images.

DATE AND MATERIAL IDENTIFICATION
The fine ivory-toned crackle glaze, polychrome enamels, extensive gilt outlining, iron-red geometric borders, formal procession imagery and signed presentation support a late-Meiji date of approximately 1890–1910.

Traditional Satsuma ceramics were commonly produced with earthenware or stoneware bodies, although porcelain decorated in the Satsuma style is also documented. Because the underside of the original jar is concealed by its later lamp mounting, the body has not been laboratory identified. It is therefore cataloged conservatively as crackle-glazed Satsuma ceramic rather than assigning a specific ceramic composition.
