A wonderful example of North Carolina folk and studio pottery by Neolia Cole, a member of the historic Cole pottery tradition of the Sanford, North Carolina area.
Handmade in a warm reddish-orange earthenware tone, this substantial pitcher features a rounded body, expressive flared pouring lip, and tall looping handle. Variations in the glaze and surface emphasize its handmade character.
The underside is particularly special. Neolia personally signed and dated the piece:
“Love Neolia Cole 1-28-2008 Sanford N.C.”
She also inscribed the underside with the saying:
“Anyone can make a mistake. Only a fool will insist on repeating it.”
The base additionally bears the circular Cole Pottery, Sanford, N.C. impressed pottery mark with the number 41 at its center.
The combination of Neolia Cole’s personal signature, date, lengthy handwritten inscription and traditional Cole Pottery stamp makes this an especially appealing example for collectors of North Carolina and Southern pottery.
A beautiful decorative pitcher with enough presence to display independently on a shelf, sideboard or collected pottery display.
