If you’d like to own a little piece of American history in celebration of the Semiquincentennial, this wonderful Lock 1776 rocking chair has a story that seems tailor-made for 2026.

Dating to 1970, the chair was produced during America’s enthusiastic run-up to the 1976 Bicentennial, a period when Colonial Revival design and interest in the nation’s early history were enjoying renewed popularity. More than half a century later, it arrives at another extraordinary milestone: the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, 1776–2026.

The chair is unmistakably Americana. Its dramatic black finish provides the backdrop for a beautifully preserved Federal eagle surrounded by 13 stars, accompanied by stylized floral decoration and delicate gold pinstriping. A tall Windsor-style spindle back, sweeping arms, sculpted wood seat, turned supports and long rockers complete its traditional American silhouette.

The underside retains its original Lock 1776 manufacturer’s label along with factory markings “320,” “B+G” and “2-70.” The “B+G” denotes the chair’s Black + Gold finish, while “2-70” dates the chair to February 1970. The “320” appears to identify the chair’s model or pattern.

And this chair has clearly been enjoyed during its 56-year life. The black finish has worn through to the natural wood in two areas of the seat, while both arms have developed substantial, wonderfully authentic rubbing from decades of use. Additional scratches, scuffs and edge wear are present throughout. Remarkably, the elaborate eagle, stars and floral decoration on the crest remains vibrant and particularly attractive.

Rather than disguising that history, the chair is offered with its vintage character plainly visible. Please review all photographs closely, as they form an important part of the condition description.

Whether displayed as a piece of Bicentennial-era Americana, enjoyed as an accent rocker, or added to a collection celebrating America’s 250th birthday, it’s difficult to imagine a more fitting year to give this Lock 1776 chair its next home. See less
