The monumental complex was begun by king darius i around 518 bce and expanded by his successors, including xerxes i and artaxerxes i. Persepolis was built as a centre of royal ceremony and imperial representation. Its terraces, palaces and stairways were decorated with intricate reliefs depicting rulers, dignitaries, guards and delegations from across the empire. In 330 bce, the city was conquered and burned by the forces of alexander the great, leaving behind the powerful ruins seen today. Persepolis has since become one of iran’s most significant archaeological sites and a unesco world heritage site. Focusing on the relief’s worn surface, symmetry and dramatic tonal contrasts, this photograph reflects on the passage of time, cultural memory and the endurance of stone. The details of erosion and damage become almost abstract, transforming an ancient architectural fragment into a contemporary study of form and decay.
