The composition leads the eye down a sunlit lane framed by shuttered windows, arched wooden doors, railings, steps and recessed entrances. A black iron streetlamp stands prominently in the foreground, its illuminated lantern and long diagonal shadow providing the painting’s principal focal point.

Merkel used a warm palette of brick red, russet, burgundy, ochre and cream, balanced by dark architectural accents and a pale blue-gray sky. Short strokes and broken highlights define the cobblestones, while visible canvas texture adds dimension to the brickwork, stucco and pavement.

Details include white shutters, a tall arched entrance set into red brick, a sidewalk railing, small architectural signs and round utility covers within the roadway. Strong linear perspective creates depth within the compact composition.

The painting is signed “Roger Merkel” in dark paint along the lower edge. The signature is clearly legible and visually consistent with documented Merkel signatures represented by the Brown County Art Guild.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Roger Merkel was born in East Chicago, Indiana, in 1949 and later lived and worked in Indianapolis. The Brown County Art Guild identifies N. C. Wyeth, Maxfield Parrish and Norman Rockwell among his formative influences.

Following a career as a Deputy United States Marshal, Merkel pursued painting full-time. He was associated with the Hoosier Salon and Brown County Art Guild and worked primarily in oil, painting architectural scenes, figures, interiors, landscapes and narrative subjects.

Merkel died in 2016. His paintings continue to be represented through the Brown County Art Guild’s estate-artist program.

Because the reverse is closed with a fitted paperboard backing, it has not been possible to determine whether the support is stretched canvas, canvas mounted to board or a prepared canvas panel. It is therefore cataloged conservatively as oil on canvas-textured artist’s support.

The frame bears no observed artist, gallery or framer’s label connecting it directly to Merkel. It is described as a vintage gilt-finished frame rather than definitively as the artist’s original frame.
