Standing an impressive 5ft 1in (155cm) high, this remarkable sculpture is a fine example of early Continental ecclesiastical art, carved with expressive features, deeply cut flowing drapery and possessing a commanding presence.

Carved from a substantial section of oak and hollowed to the reverse in the traditional manner to reduce weight and minimise movement within the timber, the figure displays the honest craftsmanship associated with large church carvings of the period. The rich, untouched patina has developed naturally over centuries, while age-related shrinkage cracks, historic repairs and losses to both arms are entirely consistent with its considerable age and original ecclesiastical use.
