This artist drew inspiration from traditional 17th-century Flemish and Dutch still lifes (the famous Medici or earthenware vase placed on a table with a fallen cut flower beside it, exactly as depicted in this painting). However, he treated his subjects with a much more modern, more "Impressionist" touch. This luminous canvas depicts a generous bouquet of peonies, poppy buds, and bellflowers, showcased in an earthenware vase.

We love the artist's masterful use of paint—generous and vibrant—and the skillful use of contrasts that lends a beautiful depth to the composition. Touches of mauve, pink, and red bring a true vitality to the muted background.
