Painted by hand on a petite stretched canvas, the composition depicts a contemplative young sitter enveloped in a dramatically arranged green hood, headscarf or shawl. Deep emerald, teal, turquoise and blue-green passages frame the face, while warm terracotta, coral and rose tones illuminate the sitter’s complexion. A restrained background of softly layered gray, taupe and muted green allows the concentrated color of the figure to command the composition.

The artist uses economical, expressive brushwork rather than precise academic modeling. Dark, arched brows and almond-shaped eyes establish the sitter’s direct yet introspective presence. SIGNATURE AND ATTRIBUTION RESEARCH
Signed or monogrammed in paint at the upper right. The inscription consists of dark, gray and reddish marks incorporated into the background, but the letterforms remain insufficiently legible for a reliable transcription.

Comparative research considered several possible readings and artist associations, including the names Kahn, Kohn and Lamm. Documented paintings and signatures by Susan B. Kahn and works attributed in the secondary market to J. Lamm were examined for placement, letter formation, palette, subject and technique.

Although certain general stylistic characteristics are shared with postwar figurative painting—including contemplative subject matter, saturated green and coral coloring and expressive brushwork—the visible inscription does not correspond closely enough to a documented signature to support a named attribution. No gallery label, certificate, exhibition record, biographical documentation or continuous ownership history accompanies the painting.

No attribution to Susan B. Kahn, J. Lamm or another named artist is asserted. The work is cataloged conservatively as a signed original portrait by an unidentified artist.

MEDIUM, CONSTRUCTION AND DATE
The artwork is painted directly on woven canvas stretched over a small wooden support. Visible brushwork, tonal blending and areas of opaque pigment appear consistent with oil or an oil-based artists’ medium. The painting has not been subjected to laboratory analysis.

The reverse confirms that the work is an original stretched-canvas painting rather than a printed reproduction. It is presented without glass, allowing the woven support and painted surface to remain visible.

The circa-1960s–1970s date is an informed estimate based on the figurative style, color palette, stretched-canvas construction, fastening methods, linen-lined framing and gilt-finished presentation. No clearly decipherable date, gallery label or contemporary purchase documentation was observed.
