An extraordinary, gallery-tier mid-century Balinese expressionist realism carving depicting an old fisherman. Hand-carved from a exceptionally dense, remarkably heavy block of premium Macassar ebony wood, this masterpiece is a definitive work by the renowned master carver Darsana.
The figure demonstrates a breathtaking level of anatomical and emotional expressiveness, showcasing a weathered, intensely focused facial structure with deeply incised wrinkles, expressive eyes, and lifelike veins across his lean torso. The fisherman is crouched in a dynamic stance upon a heavily textured, jagged base designed to mimic a volcanic coral reef. Over his left shoulder, he gathers the heavy folds of a traditional cast net, while his right hand firmly grips a carving tool or wooden paddle.
The utilization of the timber's natural grain pattern is phenomenal, allowing rich charcoal and deep black lines to travel vertically through the limbs and body, emphasizing his sinewy muscles. The underside features a pristine, chisel-cleared recessed panel housing the crisp signature "DARSANA". This pristine showcase sculpture is free of any chips, cracks, or repairs.
